Featured Classes and Special Events

New Class! Bead Weaving with Kathleen Farr*
Thursdays, 1pm-3pm
$10 Per Class LEC Members / $12 Non-Members

Bead weaving is a bead work technique in which seed beads are woven together to create a flat or a three-dimensional shape such as a ball, clasp or tube. You can bead weave an entire piece of jewelry, or weave a component to use as part of a project. This class will cover the fundamentals of off-loom, hand bead weaving techniques including both beginning and advanced bead weaving stitches. Beads are included in class fees. All necessary tools will be available during class. Yoga for Hips, Knees, Ankles, Feet, and Wrists with Natalie Courtney*
Mondays, April 23 and 30, 3:30pm-4:30pm
$6 Per Class LEC Members / $8 Non-Members

Join Natalie Courtney for a one-hour yoga class that will build your strength through repetitive movement, while stretching key muscle groups and improving range of motion. In this class, the focus is the hips, knees, ankles, feet, and wrists. It’s a fun, yet challenging yoga class for all skill levels. Yoga practice will improve flexibility, strength, balance, and posture. Natalie Courtney is a foodie, wine lover, artist, and Yoga instructor with a unique teaching style. She has over 700 hours of Yoga training and is a registered Yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes. Spring Cleaning Donation Drive to Support LifePath Hospice Thrift Stores*
Monday, April 30, 2018, 10am-4pm

On Monday, April 30 from 10am-4pm the LEC will accept your new and gently used donations of clothing (no stains or tears), home decor, lamps, jewelry, furniture, new or like new books (no encyclopedias or magazines over a year old), antiques, and small electronics (no computer/printer equipment or old TVs). Donated items will be passed along to the Life Treasures Thrift Store in Carrollwood (and proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit LifePath Hospice). *Due to limited space at the LEC, items will not be accepted outside of the date and times listed above.  

Memory Mobile @ The LEC!

The Memory Mobile is a traveling office of the Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter intended to bring public awareness and dementia-related information to the community. The Memory Mobile offers education and support to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and their caregivers. Services include: disease information, community referrals, memory education and care consultations for caregivers and individuals in the early-stage of dementia. There is no charge for services.

Pie Throwdown and Potluck Lunch

Acrylic Painting 101 and Art Open Studio with Tim Gibbons*

Art Exhibition! Artfully Aging Project Exhibition and Awards Ceremony

Art Film! Matisse: From MoMA and Tate Modern

“During the last decade of his life Henri Matisse deployed two simple materials – white paper and gouache – to create works of wide-ranging color and complexity. An unorthodox implement, a pair of scissors, was the tool Matisse used to transform paint and paper into a world of plants, animals, figures, and shapes” (excerpt borrowed from MoMA’s website).

Please join us for a behind-the-scenes documentary about the acclaimed exhibition, Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs, with contributions from people who knew Matisse and experts such as curators, historians and Tate director Nicholas Serota and MoMA director Glenn D. Lowry. Plus there are breathtaking, specially commissioned performances by Royal Ballet principal dancer Zenaida Yanowsky and jazz musician Courtney Pine. Acclaimed British actor Simon Russell Beale brings insight and emotion to the words of Henri Matisse himself, while actor Rupert Young (Merlin) narrates. Watch the trailer here. Plein Air Urban Sketching and Watercolor with Gaston McKenzie*

This month’s class will first meet at the LEC at 9am for a brief lesson by Gaston, and then relocate to TBD for the Plein Air portion of the class. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned painter who would like good company and encouragement in your watercolor painting, you’ll benefit from quick sketching and painting outdoors as you capture the essence of Tampa’s natural and urban environments. Field Trip! Pirate Water Taxi and Lunch at Armature Works*

Join us for a fun morning on the Hillsborough River aboard the Pirate Water Taxi! We will depart from the Water Works Park dock (near Ulele) at 10:30am sharp and travel south along the river. We’ll return to the Waterworks Park dock at 11:30am and then walk to the new Armature Works Heights Public Market for lunch. Some of the sights you will see along the river include: the University of Tampa, the Tampa Riverwalk, the Straz, the Tampa Museum of Art, Curtis Hixon Park, Downtown Tampa, Jose Gaspar’s Ship, Davis Islands, Harbour Island, the Tampa Convention Center, the Amalie Arena, Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, the Tampa Bay History Center, and more! Photo Club Field Trip! Lettuce Lake Park with David Beebe*

Join us for a fun morning of photography at Lettuce Lake Park where we will slowly walk much of the 3500’ of boardwalk along the Hillsborough River looking for photographic inspiration! (There is also a mostly shady paved track through the park for those who want to walk further.) One of the highlights at Lettuce Lake Park in May is that the Buttonwood trees should be in bloom. This attracts the beautiful but fidgety Prothonotary Warbler. Bring your camera, camera manual, comfortable shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, water, and sense of adventure! John Chaplick’s “Parchments of Fire” Book Launch and Author Signing

Please join us as we celebrate the book launch of Parchments of Fire, the latest book by LEC instructor John Chaplick. Meet the author and purchase a signed copy of his new book! Free and open to the public! Book synopsis: Near the island of Antikythera, off the southern coast of Greece, sponge divers discover a 2,000-year-old Roman shipwreck that harbors secrets potentially catastrophic to the public image of Greece. The government and two criminal organizations will stop at nothing to seize the documents… the government to destroy them before their existence becomes known, the criminals to sell them for exorbitant profits. Visiting Harvard Classics Professor Tobias Romulus Finch becomes the unwilling guardian of the documents, his life now dependent upon finding a solution acceptable to both opposing forces. The novel is structured to engage the reader in both the story and the fascinating geographic setting which offers a unique environmental experience.

Join members of the oldest stamp collectors club in the USA! The Tampa Collectors Club, part of the American Philatelic Society, meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Yearly membership to the Tampa Collectors Club may be obtained at any meeting: $6 for 1st year; $5 for renewals. The public is welcome to take part in the monthly Stamp Auction held the 4th Monday of every month.

Learn the basics of painting in the medium of your choice. Classes explore a range of painting techniques and principles of art to build students’ skills, including instruction on perspective, color mixing, blending, and brush control. Students supply their own materials.

Beginning Square Dancing with Ron Reardon*

Learn how to Square Dance! During this 12-week class you will learn the basic square dance movements and how to take direction from a “caller”. Square Dancing is an excellent way to meet new people, exercise, and have fun at the same time! A square dance is a dance for four couples (eight dancers) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. The various square dance movements are based on the steps and figures used in traditional folk dances and social dances from many countries. Beginning American Mah Jongg with Alice Webb*

A beautiful blend of dominoes and gin rummy, the game is played with a set of tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. The goal? Be the first one to put together a hand of 14 tiles. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation with a generous helping of luck thrown in. Learn the basics with instructor Alice Webb as she guides you into becoming a skilled player. Mah Jongg Open Play*

By popular demand, the LEC will be hosting Mah Jongg Open Play every Wednesday from 4pm-8pm beginning July 5th! The cost is $4 per player and attendees are welcome to bring snacks and beverages (adult beverages included!) There will not be an instructor present. This Open Play group is for players who have a good understanding of the game, and who want to play with other friendly, supportive Mah Jongg players. This is not a highly competitive group, however, American Mah Jongg rules (as governed by the National Mah Jongg League) will be followed. Please bring your 2017 card with you. The card can be purchased here. We will have three tables (12 seats) available. *If you would like to guarantee a seat for the duration of the open play session, please either pre-pay at the LEC or pre-pay with a credit card at (813) 932-0241 at least one day prior to the open play session. Attendees who pre-pay will not be required to rotate out. Attendees who “pay at the door” will be provided a seat on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there are more than 12 players in attendance (with players waiting to play), players who did not pre-pay will take turns rotating out after each game.

This class is for intermediate and advanced players (players who have completed our beginning Mah Jongg class series, or who have prior experience playing the game). Instructor Alice Webb has played Mah Jongg for twenty five years for entertainment and fun, and has been teaching Mah Jongg regularly for over three years. Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa
4th Saturdays, 10am-12pm

The Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa meets regularly to study and enjoy the art of bonsai. Club activities include workshops, visiting guest speakers, and demonstrations. Members have a wide range of experience with bonsai and are always happy to have beginners join the group. Creating your own bonsai is easier than you might think. Their more experienced members are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise, and those with less experience will find many opportunities to learn design and horticultural skills that make creating your own bonsai easy and fun. Have a great time while making new friends and learning about bonsai from each other and visiting experts. Yearly membership is $25 individual/$35 couple but isn’t required for meeting attendance.
