New Class! Chair Yoga with Natalie Courtney*
Mondays, 4pm-4:45pm
$6 LEC Members / $8 Non-Members

Chair Yoga is a gentle exercise program especially designed for people who have difficulty getting to the floor. Participants will be guided through a series of stretches and yoga postures that can be modified to accommodate those with limited mobility and difficulty balancing. Each class includes breathing and guided relaxation. Yoga practice will improve flexibility, strength, balance, and posture. Natalie Courtney is a foodie, wine lover, artist, and Yoga instructor with a unique teaching style. She has over 700 hours of Yoga training and is a registered Yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Students will have bare feet during the class to ensure stability. Art Talk! New Encaustic Techniques with Francine Bauer

Join us for a free Art Talk on new encaustic techniques presented by encaustic artist Francine Bauer! Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. Art Talks are free and open to the public. Brown bag lunches are always welcome.

LEC Photography Club with David Beebe*

The Life Enrichment Center’s Photography Club is for beginners as well as seasoned photographers. The club meets once a month for open discussions, demonstrations, and workshops. The group will select a field trip location for a separate day and then review field trip results at the next meeting. Eclipse Watch Party! Art Open Studio and Potluck*

The 2017 solar eclipse will take place on Monday, August 21st! Please join us for an eclipse viewing party, an art open studio, and a potluck lunch! The beginning of the partial eclipse in Tampa will take place at 1:17pm and the maximum eclipse will take place at 2:49pm (Tampa will witness 82% obscuration). Bring your art supplies (or just plan to hang out) and a dish to share! *The first 40 attendees who register before the day of the event will receive a complimentary pair of eclipse viewing glasses (NASA approved!) Art Talk! Exploring Cold Wax with Francine Bauer

Free

Join us for a free Art Talk on cold wax techniques presented by encaustic artist Francine Bauer! The cold wax medium is composed mainly of beeswax and a small amount of solvent. Cold wax is combined with oil paint and then applied through various methods to a substrate. Cold wax adds body and speeds up the drying time for oils. It’s the perfect bridge between classic oil painting and the encaustic medium. Art Talks are free and open to the public. Brown bag lunches are always welcome.

Plein Air Urban Sketching and Watercolor with Gaston McKenzie*

Two-Day Workshop! Indigo Dyeing Workshop with James Dennison*
Friday and Saturday, TBD October, 2017, 10am-4pm each day
$95 LEC Members / $115 Non-Members

Join us for this exciting two-day workshop where students will learn how to create designs on fabric using a 12th century Japanese resist technique, and a few beginning Shibori techniques! Each student will create 3-5 pieces using cotton fabric stenciled or hand-painted with clay paste resist and then dyed in an indigo vat. Students will also learn how to mix several different kinds of indigo vats so they may continue the technique at home. Class fees include many materials including: indigo dye, clay paste resist, stencils, additional resist materials for experimentation, sponges, and gloves. Students should bring a piece of white or natural cotton fabric (like muslin) that has been thoroughly washed and dried *without* dryer sheets, a cheap 1/2″ or less flat bristle brush that can be thrown away, and a needle and thread (any color) to make identifying stitches on the fabric. Jim Dennison is a textile artist and printmaker from Dade City, FL who has been working with eco-printing and natural dyeing since 2009. He has taught at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, USF Botanical Gardens, and internationally in Vilnius, Lithuania and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Painting with Pastels with Janice Shindle* (Please note: This class will not take place on August 21st due to the Eclipse Watch Party)

Join us every Monday as we explore the fun and versatile pastel medium! This class is for both beginners and advanced pastel artists. Students will learn how to use the pastel medium, drawing, underpainting, composition, color, perspective, and blending in an open studio environment. Beginning and Intermediate Crochet with Susan Lord*

Once you know the basics about yarns, hooks, and patterns – crochet is very easy to learn! It’s no longer limited to the old methods of making doilies and lace, but now full of color and fast to make with bulky yarns. From cotton dish cloths to elegant scarves, hats, and bags, the process is the same. Stamp Collectors Club
2nd and 4th Mondays, 6pm-9pm

Join members of the oldest stamp collectors club in the USA! The Tampa Collectors Club, part of the American Philatelic Society, meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Yearly membership to the Tampa Collectors Club may be obtained at any meeting: $6 for 1st year; $5 for renewals. The public is welcome to take part in the monthly Stamp Auction held the 4th Monday of every month.

All levels welcome, from aspiring writers to published authors! This class encourages the creative side of you, whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or short stories. Develop your creative writing skills through exercises, creative feedback, and encouragement. Students will also learn about editing and publishing their work.

Enjoy a 60 minute total fitness experience under the direction of a certified aerobics instructor, Silver Sneakers instructor, and personal trainer! This class incorporates moderate levels of cardiovascular condition, balance, flexibility, and strengthening. Please note: Lynn Donofrio will be away for the summer, returning on August 15, 2017. Thursdays classes will be led by Martha Cameron through August 10th. Tuesdays classes have been cancelled and will resume on August 15th.

Beginning American Mah Jongg with Alice Webb* – Please Call to Register

A beautiful blend of dominoes and gin rummy, the game is played with a set of tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. The goal? Be the first one to put together a hand of 14 tiles. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation with a generous helping of luck thrown in. Learn the basics with instructor Alice Webb as she guides you into becoming a skilled player. New Class! Mah Jongg Open Play*

By popular demand, the LEC will be hosting Mah Jongg Open Play every Wednesday from 4pm-8pm beginning July 5th! The cost is $4 per player and attendees are welcome to bring snacks and beverages (adult beverages included!) There will not be an instructor present. This Open Play group is for players who have a good understanding of the game, and who want to play with other friendly, supportive Mah Jongg players. This is not a highly competitive group, however, American Mah Jongg rules (as governed by the National Mah Jongg League) will be followed. Please bring your 2017 card with you. The card can be purchased here. We will have three tables (12 seats) available. *If you would like to guarantee a seat for the duration of the open play session, please either pre-pay at the LEC or pre-pay with a credit card at (813) 932-0241 at least one day prior to the open play session. Attendees who pre-pay will not be required to rotate out. Attendees who “pay at the door” will be provided a seat on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there are more than 12 players in attendance (with players waiting to play), players who did not pre-pay will take turns rotating out after each game.

Our Wednesday night pARTy Open Studio provides all the space, expertise, and many of the materials you will need to create an original piece of art… in the medium of your choice, and in the company of other artists. Bring your creativity, art supplies, friends, and adult beverages and join the pARTy Open Studio! Whether you are a painter (oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, etc.); like to experiment with drawing, collage, mixed media, scratch boards, linocuts, etc.; or enjoy creating three dimensional works of art (wood, wire, jewelry, paper clay, polymer clay, glass, etc.) this is the class for you! Bring the project that you are working on, or just bring your sense of adventure and instructor Tim Gibbons will assist you with trying out a new medium. Intermediate/Advanced American Mah Jongg with Alice Webb

Perfect your skills, learn more about strategy, and gain insights into mastering this addicting game while playing with other experienced Mah Jongg players. This class is for intermediate and advanced players (players who have completed our beginning Mah Jongg class series, or who have prior experience playing the game). Instructor Alice Webb has played Mah Jongg for twenty five years for entertainment and fun, and has been teaching Mah Jongg regularly for over three years. It is recommended that students order the official game card from the National Mah Jongg League at https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org/league.html

Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa

Free

The Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa meets regularly to study and enjoy the art of bonsai. Club activities include workshops, visiting guest speakers, and demonstrations. Members have a wide range of experience with bonsai and are always happy to have beginners join the group. Creating your own bonsai is easier than you might think.  Their more experienced members are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise, and those with less experience will find many opportunities to learn design and horticultural skills that make creating your own bonsai easy and fun. Have a great time while making new friends and learning about bonsai from each other and visiting experts. Yearly membership is $25 individual/$35 couple but isn’t required for meeting attendance.
