All Materials Included! Intuitive Collage and Found Object Collage! 2D Open Lab with Tim Gibbons*

Join us every Wednesday in May as we explore the art of Collage! On May 3 and 10, students will experiment with Intuitive Collage — by selecting images, words, textures, and colors without thinking or judging, fresh and spontaneous personal works of art will emerge. On May 17, 24, and 31, students can continue their work with Intuitive Collage, or try their hand at Found Object Collage (please bring your favorite found objects). No prior experience needed. North Tampa Arts League (NTAL) General Meeting*

Workshop! Advanced Watercolor Techniques with Ruth Nienhaus*

Join us every Tuesday in May as we explore jewelry making with guest instructor Brenda Gregory! Students will learn how to make a variety of pieces that they will love to wear or give as gifts. Instruction will include how to: make a simple chain, make a Byzantine chain and a Sheppard’s hook, stamp on metal, use a soldering kit, make a Half Persian 4-in-1 pattern, make a T-toggle, and work safely and properly with jewelry making tools. Free Art Talk! St. Pete Murals

The streets of St. Pete are alive with creativity and color. A myriad of urban murals and street art of all sizes, shapes, and styles have popped up around the city. Take a virtual tour with us as we view images and videos of these amazing works of art. Art Talks are free and open to the public. Brown bag lunches are always welcome. 

LEC Fundraiser! Drag Queen Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s Brandon*

Please join us for the most fun you can have while raising money for the Life Enrichment Center! Drag Queen Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s has arrived in Brandon…and the Life Enrichment Center will be the recipient of all bingo proceeds during this event! For $10 per person (cash), you will receive your bingo supplies and 10 rounds of bingo fun with awesome prizes! We will also be doing a 50/50 raffle. 100% of the bingo proceeds will be donated to the LEC… and many non-profits have reported earning $1000-2000 depending on the crowd size. Free Art Show! The Art of Mary Frances @ First Friday Art in the Heights

Mary Frances has been drawing and painting since childhood. As an adult, life led her down a path of family, education, and professional opportunities but her passion for creating art never faded. After retirement, Mary Frances moved from Atlanta to Tampa and has dedicated herself and her time to the arts. She is a student of the Life Enrichment Center and the Town and Country Senior Center which have provided instruction, conducive work spaces, comradeship, and encouragement in refining her work. Mary Frances has explored the media of pencil and ink drawing, pastels, watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Her subject matter covers a broad spectrum from abstraction to hyper realism. She is currently exhibiting in Tampa’s local libraries, businesses, the Life Enrichment Center, and a variety of art exhibitions. This show is free and open to the public.

Free Art Show! Faces – Searching for Character: The Art of Christian Howard Opening Reception
Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 6pm-7:30pm
The Gallery on the Boulevard at North Tampa Branch Library

Christian Howard is an emerging artist in the Tampa Bay area. He is best known for his work in graphite pencils, water soluble graphite, pen and ink, and digital media. By artistically fusing traditional and digital styles, he strives to create visual poetry. His most recent exhibit Faces – Searching for Character is currently showing at The Gallery on the Boulevard at North Tampa Branch Library during May and June. This is a collection of sketches of faces – giving you a glimpse into each person’s soul. Take a moment to look closely, look at their eyes, the wrinkles of wisdom, the strength of an arched brow, the curve of a smile. Christian is mostly self-taught, but great strides were made during his time learning at the Life Enrichment Center. He loves to draw and drawing has a therapeutic and meditative effect for him. He desires to share his passion for drawing and art with all who view his work. During the opening reception on Tuesday, June 6, guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist. Refreshments will be served by the Friends of the North Tampa Library. This show is free and open to the public.

Free Health Event! Memory Screenings

What is your “brain age”? Is your brain in shape? Do you exercise your brain? A memory screen is a wellness tool that helps identify possible changes in memory and cognition. It creates a baseline in order to monitor future changes. Please join us on Wednesday, June 7th at 12:45 pm for a free memory screening from Olympian Clinical Research! All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a gift card!

Plein Air Urban Sketching with Gaston McKenzie*

Learn how to sketch and paint in watercolor by joining instructor Gaston McKenzie at a variety of locations throughout Tampa! This month’s the class will meet at the Life Enrichment Center at 10am where Gaston will spend a brief amount of time discussing technique. Lionel holds Signature Member status in the Colorado Watercolor Society, Miami Watercolor Society, and the Gold Coast Watercolor Society. Painting with Pastels with Janice Shindle*

Join us every Monday as we explore the fun and versatile pastel medium! This class is for both beginners and advanced pastel artists. Students will learn how to use the pastel medium, drawing, underpainting, composition, color, perspective, and blending in an open studio environment. Beginning and Intermediate Crochet with Susan Lord*
Mondays, 1pm-3pm
$10 LEC Members / $12 Non-Members

Once you know the basics about yarns, hooks, and patterns – crochet is very easy to learn! It’s no longer limited to the old methods of making doilies and lace, but now full of color and fast to make with bulky yarns. From cotton dish cloths to elegant scarves, hats, and bags, the process is the same. Stamp Collectors Club
2nd and 4th Mondays, 6pm-9pm

Join members of the oldest stamp collectors club in the USA! The Tampa Collectors Club, part of the American Philatelic Society, meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Yearly membership to the Tampa Collectors Club may be obtained at any meeting: $6 for 1st year; $5 for renewals. The public is welcome to take part in the monthly Stamp Auction held the 4th Monday of every month.

All levels welcome, from aspiring writers to published authors! This class encourages the creative side of you, whether you write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or short stories. Develop your creative writing skills through exercises, creative feedback, and encouragement. Students will also learn about editing and publishing their work.

Watercolor Open Lab with Patricia Beebe*

Join us for a friendly and engaging open studio environment that allows recent beginners (who have some experience) or intermediate artists (with works in progress or who are just starting new projects) to paint at their leisure. Students are encouraged to bring photo references to work from, or find one in our extensive LEC library. Demonstrations will be given and guidance and critiques are available during class if desired. *Please contact us prior to your first class for the list of suggested materials.

Learn the basics of painting in the medium of your choice. Classes explore a range of painting techniques and principles of art to build students’ skills, including instruction on perspective, color mixing, blending, and brush control. Students supply their own materials.

3D Open Lab*

Join us every Tuesday as we explore a variety of 3D art mediums! Each class will include a demonstration and hands on activity, in addition to open studio time. Students can work at their own pace on the project of the week or on their own project. Mediums may include but aren’t limited to: stone carving, wood carving, glass fusion, polymer clay, paper clay, and jewelry making. Beginning American Mah Jongg with Alice Webb* – Please Call to Register

A beautiful blend of dominoes and gin rummy, the game is played with a set of tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. The goal? Be the first one to put together a hand of 14 tiles. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation with a generous helping of luck thrown in. Learn the basics with instructor Alice Webb as she guides you into becoming a skilled player. Perfect your skills, learn more about strategy, and gain insights into mastering this addicting game while playing with other experienced Mah Jongg players. This class is for intermediate and advanced players (players who have completed our beginning Mah Jongg class series, or who have prior experience playing the game). Instructor Alice Webb has played Mah Jongg for twenty five years for entertainment and fun, and has been teaching Mah Jongg regularly for over three years. It is recommended that students order the official game card from the National Mah Jongg League at https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org/league.html

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Open Meeting: North Tampa Young and the Restless Group

Open meetings are for anyone who is interested in AA, Al-Anon or ACOA. Open meetings can be attended by students, professionals, and other non-members interested in learning more about the recovery programs.

Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa – This group will not meet at the LEC in April or May*

*Please note: The Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa will be attending the Earth Day Program at Moccasin Lake Nature Park in Clearwater on April 22nd, and the National Bonsai Convention in Orlando on May 27th. Meetings at the LEC will resume on June 24th.

The Hukyu Bonsai Society of Tampa meets regularly to study and enjoy the art of bonsai. Club activities include workshops, visiting guest speakers, and demonstrations. Members have a wide range of experience with bonsai and are always happy to have beginners join the group. Creating your own bonsai is easier than you might think.  Their more experienced members are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise, and those with less experience will find many opportunities to learn design and horticultural skills that make creating your own bonsai easy and fun. Have a great time while making new friends and learning about bonsai from each other and visiting experts. Yearly membership is $25 individual/$35 couple but isn’t required for meeting attendance.
