Free Art Show! Living Legend: A Koehler Family Exhibition @ First Friday Art in the Heights
Friday, July 7, 2017, 6pm-9pm
Urban Bungalow and Cleanse Apothecary
(6500 N Florida Ave, Tampa, 33604)

Barbara and Bill Koehler have always been drawn to the arts. Although their love of the arts never faded, raising a family and establishing their careers often took precedence. By the late 1990s they were both retired and enjoying their role as grandparents. About 10 years ago, they wanted to reignite their passion for the arts and discovered the Life Enrichment Center. They have been taking art classes ever since. Barbara and Bill’s son Keith is now a recording artist who also enjoys acrylic painting. Keith’s wife Megan is a watercolorist, and both have works of art featured in the family exhibition. Also featured in the show is their grandson Robert who used to join his grandparents for classes at the Life Enrichment Center; granddaughter Kristen who is currently a senior at USF majoring in Fine Arts; granddaughter Sara who has been painting since she was six and currently attends Orange Grove Middle Magnet School where she sings and dances; and granddaughters Jordan, Ellie, and Emily who enjoy “painting with Grammy” and who each have a piece of art in the show. Living Legend features over 15 pieces of art by the Koehler family. From pastels to linocuts, acrylics to watercolor, these works of art not only represent the talents of each individual artist, but the appreciation for the arts that Barbara and Bill have instilled in their children and grandchildren. This show is free and open to the public.

This is the first art exhibition to focus exclusively on the use of LEGO® bricks as an art medium and artist Nathan Sawaya has taken it to new heights. He has created replicas of famous works of art such as Girl with a Pearl Earring, the ancient Greek statue of Venus de Milo, and Rodin’s The Thinker. There’s also a life-size T-Rex skeleton and Sawaya’s famous Yellow, a sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow Lego bricks cascading from the cavity. The Art of the Brick Tampa will feature countless colorful LEGO pieces which Sawaya has transformed into over 100 whimsical and awe-inspiring creations. Sawaya’s ability to transform this common toy into something meaningful, his devotion to spatial perfection, and the way he conceptualizes action, enables him to elevate what almost every child has played with into the status of contemporary art. The Art of the Brick Tampa is located at 802 E.
